Current Projects: My main project is a book called Crossing the Borderline: Edgework, Transgression and the Sociology of Vindictiveness which is a sequel to The Exclusive Society and which is about blurring, the breaking and the creation of normative boundaries in late modernity. This book is now in a first draft stage and the chapters will give some indication of its scope. Ch1 Blurring the Boundaries: Globalization and Social Exclusion Ch2 Globalization, Chaos and the Narcissism of Minor Differences Ch3 The Maintenance of Order Amongst Lightly Engaged Strangers Ch4 John Braithwaite and the Sociology of Shame Ch5 Immigration, Crime and the Demonization of the Other Ch6 Punishment and the Sociology of Vindictiveness Ch7 Drugs, Moral Panics and Transgression Ch8 The Labour Party and Social Exclusion: Crime, Indiscipline and Salvation through Labour Ch9 Transformative Politics in a World of Economic and Ontological Insecurity A spin – off of this project is a research proposal which I am working on concerning the relationship between punitiveness and economic and ontological precariousness. I am also working on a book entitled Merton's Dream and Quetelet's Warning. Chapters have been written on Quetelet, Durkheim, Merton and Subcultural Theory.
